RIGAS RITMI
2011: Christian McBride
On 26th of April, 19:00 at
Riga Congress Centre will perform american jazz bassist Christian McBride.
“Revisits familiar jazz territories, but with a vivacity that bathes them
with new light.” – The Guardian
Bassist extraodinaire, composer, arranger, educator, Christian McBride, has been
one of the most important and most omnipresent figures in the jazz world for 20
years. Beginning in 1989, this Philadelphia-born bassist moved to New York City
to further his classical studies at the Juilliard School, only to be snatched up
by alto saxophonist, Bobby Watson.
As a sideman in the jazz world alone, he's worked with the best of the very best
- Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, McCoy
Tyner, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny. In the R&B world,
he's not only played with, but also arranged for Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan,
Natalie Cole, Lalah Hathaway, and the one and only Godfather of Soul himself,
James Brown.
Rolling Stone named McBride as "Hot Jazz Artist of 1991 " and top bassist in1992
and 1993. In 1994 he was honored at the Mellon Jazz Festival, Philadelphia.
Christian McBride also is winner of Down Beat's critics' poll and the Jazz
Times's readers' poll in jazz category, both 1996. McBride was voted as new
artist of the year by Japan's Swing Journal, 1996, voted jazz artist of the year
by Gavin in 1996.
