RIGAS RITMI 2011: Rudresh Mahanthappa
On 27th of April, 19:00 at
Riga Congress Centre will perform american jazz alto-saxophonist and composer
Rudresh Mahanthappa.
„A promising force on the jazz scene for the last 20 years!" DownBeat
Magazine
Winner of the "Rising Star-Jazz Artist" and "Rising Star-Alto Saxophone"
categories in 2009 Downbeat International Critics Poll, followed by "Alto
Saxophonist of the Year" in 2011, Guggenheim fellow artist Rudresh Mahanthappa
is one of the most innovative composers and performers in jazz today, fusing the
musical culture of his Indian ancestry with jazz and myriad other influences to
create groundbreaking artistic vision.
New-York based jazz alto-saxophonist and composer Rudresh Mahanthappa was born
in Italy and grew up in Colorado, USA. He graduated from Berklee College of
Music and received his Master of Fine Arts degree in jazz composition from
Chicago's DePaul University. Being introduced to Indian saxophonist Kadri
Gopalnath, whose use of Western instrument in the context of South Indian (Carnatic)
music surprised and inspired Mahanthappa, he travelled to India, developing
mutual interest in fusing Indian and Western approaches to improvisation.
Rudresh Mahanthappa's performance with an electro-acoustic quartet featuring
internationally renowned musicians David Gilmore (guitar), Rich Brown (bass),
Gene Lake (drums) in "an edgy & soulful synthesis of kinetic jazz, Indian
influences, and percolating electronic beats & loops" (Anil Prasad, Innerviews),
represents a blend of complex melodic and rhythmic elements of both modern jazz
and traditional music of Mahanthappa's Indian roots. What the New Yorker has
called Rudresh's "visceral tone and grab-you-by-the-collar attack" will sure
deeply engage the listener while breaking new ground in the multicultural
landscape of modern music.
Line Up: Rudresh Mahanthappa - alto saxophone, David Gilmore -
guitar, Rich Brown - bass, Gene Lake - drums.
